Grumbler: YOUR second.... если на то пошло, а doing-то не звучит в данном контексте на мой взгляд. working on или getting звучали бы гораздо лучше.

Что особенного в этом контексте? Разве не говорят, например, "do(ing) master(')s", что по сути то же самое?

We have this crazy use of DO with certain things. For example, you can say “Let’s do lunch tomorrow,” but in a direct question, it would sound weird to ask somebody “Are you doing lunch right now?“ I guess it’s because it only refers to a general action in the broadest sense. So it sounds strange, when you put it in a question relating to present actuality. It’s hard to explain. It just sounds weird in a question like this. Funny enough, it doesn’t sound strange to ask “where are you doing your master’s?“ -or- are you doing your masters in Russian literature?“ But “are you doing a degree?“ sounds clumsy as hell.
