This sounds like a restaurant inside a building, since it say that THEY HAVE (i.e. schools, office buildings, universities, that HAVE...). We can totally forget about CANTEEN - that's where soldiers ate during the Korean war. A DINER is a freestanding restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch, and only standard American fare like hamburgers, hotdogs, chili, pie, milkshakes, etc. The only reasonable option left is a CAFETERIA, where students, employees, etc. can go have a meal during the course of the work- or schoolday.

I think you’re right, Uly. I first thought that Anna was talking about some small size cafe calling it “столовая”, because back in the Soviet era this word had a broader meaning, but now it’s mostly used in its “cafeteria” sense.

Cool, thanks for confirming, Olga, I didn't know if I had misunderstood.

Holy Molyadded a comment 8 anos atrás

grumbleradded a comment 8 anos atrás

And it doesn’t exactly look like Madame Philipova is falling over herself to give us any insights as to the context...

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8 anos atrás

That didn’t even occur to me 😛

Анна Филипповаadded a comment 8 anos atrás

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8 anos atrás

“To have“ would mean that they don’t already have one. The Russian to me sounds like they’re referring to people who already do.
