Hi Uly,
The Russian context covers both distant and personal contact:
«Это была новость! До самой нашей свадьбы никто на работе не знал, что мы с Ольгой общались уже полгода. Ну разве что пару раз нас видели вместе, и то это были разные люди.»

Yes, but if you use “talking”, it sounds like you were not talking before because you were in an argument, and then you resumed talking.

Мы с ней долго не разговаривали ( после той ужасной ссоры).
