Sasha, I HATE TO [infinitive] means "I apologize beforehand for having to [infinitive]" "I hate to disappoint you, but your son's not going to arrive in time for your party. He had to cancel his flight due to a hurricane."

Alexander Аkimovadded a comment 4 years ago

"I hate to leave you, but I really must say good night., sweet heart, good night." That's clear. But how about "How many arms have held you, and hated to let you go"? Or does it have the same meaning?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 4 years ago

The second one is stylized for the song. Normally, we would say “hated letting you go”.

Got it. The same ol' room...
for improvement 🤓

So, will this work - I hate learning this/that lesson? Or like Russ S wrote - I don't want to study this lesson?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 4 years ago

Better STUDY. The verb LEARN is resultative it refers ideally to the result of the process of STUDY. So, you hate studying -or- having to learn, something.

Alexander Аkimovadded a comment 4 years ago

Yes, like "Lessons learned" - the result of experience. Thank you.
