This actually makes sense to me. For instance, now in the US, we're having people demand that we call them by certain pronouns that reflect their gender identity. I recently saw a video of a woman in Starbucks who was asked by one barista what she'd like to order, and referring to another barista who looked like a girl, the woman said "She already took my order." The "female" barista freaked out and started yelling at the customer "I'm a HE!!!" The woman answer, "Well, you look like a SHE and I don't know you or what you identify as, but if I see a female, I'm going to call her SHE!" In other words, the customer wasn't willing to go along with what most people are accepting just to avoid an unpleasant encounter with this irrational barista. I believe that's what the Russian here is referring to, if I'm not crazy.

Я согласна с Грамблером, что предложение неоднозначное, хотя более вероятный вариант очевиден. Кроме того, «во избежание» - официальный, я бы даже сказала, казённый стиль, который не совсем уместен в данном предложении, как мне кажется.
