House Speaker Mike Johnson defended President Donald Trump’s plans to receive a luxury jet from Qatar, saying he doesn’t think the gift raises ethics concerns.

Trump’s first major second-term foreign trip touring the Middle East this week has provoked criticism over a spate of business deals his family has made across the region and revelations the president is considering accepting a 747 jet from the government of Qatar. He said will use the jet temporarily as Air Force One, indicating he intends to accept the gift. But Johnson, the top-ranking House Republican leader, defended the gift of the jet as no more than a routine donation to the US government from a foreign nation rather than a personal gift to Trump.

“My understanding is it’s not a personal gift to the president, it’s a gift to the United States,” Johnson said. “Other nations give us gifts all the time.” The Trump’s family’s business dealings in the region are “all out in the open,” he added.

“They’re not trying to conceal anything,” Johnson said in response to a question about whether Trump’s family is similar to President Joe Biden’s son Hunter, who Republican lawmakers accused of improperly offering access to his father in exchange for business deals. Trump this week is touring Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates — all countries where the Trump Organization has recently sought new investments. Trump’s sons are running Trump Organization while their father is in the White House.

The Trump family’s business since last year has announced a new Trump Tower in Dubai, a luxury golf resort in Qatar, and real estate projects in Riyadh.

The massive profits for Trump and his family from his assorted crypto projects, including the Trump memecoin, a stablecoin venture that has seen billions in business, as well as other overseas business deals, have prompted a furor from Democrats who have called them corrupt.

I can just tell you, President Trump has nothing to hide, he’s very upfront about it,” Johnson said. “Congress has oversight responsibility, but so far as I know the ethics are all being followed.”

Illinois Democratic Representative Sean Casten on Bloomberg TV Tuesday night said taking a luxury jet from a foreign government was a “clear violation of the Constitution, which says you cannot accept a gift from a foreign prince or king or nation.”

“This is a gift he is accepting,” Casten said. “Congress has the ability to do oversight, we have the ability to enforce the Constitution. Speaker Johnson is choosing not to.”

Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, also asked Attorney General Pam Bondi for a copy of her legal guidance to the White House that deemed accepting the jet legal. Under the arrangement, which officials from both countries have acknowledged discussing, Qatar would offer a luxury Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet for use as Air Force One.

The gift would be a bridge while Boeing Co. works on delivering newer versions of the presidential aircraft and with Trump expressing disappointment with the current jet.

The Qatari jet is outfitted with luxury fixtures, and Trump himself toured the jet a few weeks ago when it made a stop in West Palm Beach.
