EA, you win :)
Гузель, my contribution to this post is "occupational hazard" which we use like figuratively like this:
"I was close to the victims... an occupational hazard when you're the only doctor in town."
"Я был близок с жертвами... издержки профессии, если ты единственный доктор на весь город."
Thanks a lot!and "wastes of profession" is right too, isn't it?
It couldn't be further from correct.
Oh ok😄
The best answer is occupational hazard, but every time I post it gets voted down by EA.
Гузель, if "wastes of profession" were correct, it wouldn't have four thumbs down. I don't know enough Russian to know what the Russian version means, but judging from the other translations, Uly's and Elena's are the most accurate (in that order). EA's translation doesn't even figure because it means absolutely nothing. For starters, the plural form "wastes" is seldom, if never, used.
Uly, occupational hazrds - это профессиональные риски. Издержки профессии - это не риски. Это побочный эффект.
Это могут быть какие-то плохие привычки, связанные с профессией.
Elena, I know very well what occupational risks means, but we also use it in the figurative sense of things that are unfortunate yet expected parts of a job. If you follow my link you'll see what I mean.
All right, thank you, Uly)
Елена, "occupational hazard" используется повсеместно в переносном, часто в ироническом смысле и имеет значение именно "издержки профессии". Например человек говорит своему другу: "Stop being so suspicious, man", и друг отвечает "Sorry mate, occupational hazard of being a cop".
Отличный пример, Ольга)
In other words: I can't help it - I'm a cop and that's what cops do.
Да, я поняла, спасибо , Uly and Olga )
Good e-card)
haha, yes, it was very fitting :)
