If I had to express the original Russian sentiment in English, this is what I would say word for word. It’s a little longer, but it’s very idiomatic.

For example, Leo translated it quite literally and it just doesn’t say anything, let alone express the humor of the original sentiment.

To me "when that person happens to be you" sounds as "когда этот человек - ты"

And isn’t that another way of saying the original statement?

You could say YOURSELF, but it’s totally unnecessary. The context makes it clear that YOU is YOURSELF here.
