Uly, I'd translate it like
Is it correct?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 6 years ago

I think задумали carries a connotation of being up to something questionable or downright underhanded. In this question, however, it merely means “guess what we’re doing right now”

I may be wrong, though))

One thing we’ve been exploring a lot since the time you left the community is taking into account what PROMPTS people to say what they do. As a native, for instance, I would be prompted to ask “Guess what we’re up to” if it was something that would come as a surprise to the listener. For instance, if I was a strict vegetarian and refused to handle or eat meat, but I was making a turkey for Thanksgiving. I might text my sister and say “Guess what we’re/I’m up to?” because I know she would be amused or shocked or otherwise surprised to know that I’m preparing meat.

My first instinct was to translate it as Угадай, что я здесь/тут замутил? in spite of the fact that the English implies an action in progress and the aspect Russian verb is perfect.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 6 years ago

And I don’t even know what that means, so I’m no help.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 6 years ago

This is more like “you’ll never guess what we’re doing right now!”

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 6 years ago

Or “you’ll never believe what we’re doing right now”

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 6 years ago

Elena Bogomolovaadded a comment 6 years ago

Depending on the context, I would translate it like
If very informal, it could be

I like the last one! It sounds like what this means. You imagine the other person to be surprised))

Imagine that a few days ago, your mother told you that she heard there’s a strawberry farm in your town, where you can pick your own strawberries and she said “doesn’t that sound cool?” A couple of days later, you and your friend incidentally drove by the farm and decided to go in and pick some. Amused by the coincidence that you and your mother had just talked about it, you text her “Guess what we’re up to?”

Elena Bogomolovaadded a comment 6 years ago

Прикинь is slang. Youger people would say so, but not grown-ups.
Adults would rather say
Thank you, now it's clear!

Good to know. Thank you!
