Не знала, что перевод уже есть. :)

«Что выделяет его как журналиста, так это то, как мастерски он пишет истории. Он может взять самое обычное событие и сделать на его основе 30-минутный документальный фильм.»
Улий, в твоём примере значение, которая привела Елена. «У него нюх на новости» говорят про репортёра, который с завидным постоянством первым оказывается на месте самых интересных, драматичных и т.д. событий.

Tatiana, according to your translation, he's good at telling stories. That's not what this means - this means that he can look at a situation and find something newsworthy. If you look at the passage that Elena cited, a few lines above it says "Dafoe spent the majority of his career as a pamphleter and NEWSPAPER WRITER" - they're referring to his journalistic "eye," not to the fact that he's a good storyteller.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8 years ago

Consequently, your translation of my example is inaccurate. It should refer to his nose for news/journalism, not his mastery at storytelling.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 8 years ago

Of course, I may be wrong but what all this started with was your translation. As I see it, «у него нюх на новости» actually refers to a reporter's talent to find scoops before other people can do this.

A scoop is a good story

Exactly! We call news “stories”

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 8 years ago

Uly, secondly, «Что выделяет его из всех журналистов, так это его нюх на новости. Он может взять самое заурядное событие и сделать из него 30-минутный документальный фильм» looks rather weird for a Russian reader or/and listener. They'd expect something like «Это ведь он предал огласке историю директора местного завода, который нелегально продал оборудование и собирался смыться за границу с любовницей, бросив семью. Тогда это была настоящая бомба в наших СМИ». What I mean, «иметь нюх на новости» и «заурядное событие» really don't match. Though, I fully trust the English part of your work.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8 years ago

I don’t really understand your logic, but at least you understand the English expression now (hopefully). It’s the ability to look at something and say “That’s news!”

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 8 years ago

I meant that your translation нюх на новости doesn't work for the situation under it.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8 years ago

Ok, here's a better example: "After 20 years as a journalist, the paper wanted to promote him to Editor in Chief, but in the end they decided to keep him on the street. The fact is he had a real eye for a story."

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 8 years ago

После того, как он 20 лет отработал журналистом, его хотели назначить главным редактором, но в конце концов решили оставить на должности репортёра (?). А всё потому, что у него нюх на новости. You can interprete that this way provided it implies that he has an outstanding ability to dig up some shocking, sensational etc. facts, what the Russian expression means. Нюх на новости = чутьё на сенсации. The words "mundane" and «everyday» in your first example made this translation impossible.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8 years ago

Tatiana, actually MUNDANE was the key to my example - I meant that a good reporter can look at what seems mundane to other people with different eyes and make it newsworthy. But I admit it was a confusing example. I think this last one is much better. Thanks again!

Долго думала, как это перевести. Я бы перевела примерно так: "способность подмечать интересное в жизни и создавать из этого сюжеты". По-моему сенсация здесь ни причем.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8 years ago

Отлично. Это как раз что надо. А как ты ещё не спишь?

Еще "Умение находить интересные сюжеты". У меня только 7 вечера🌝

Ули, можно это пeревести Present Perfect Continuous? Мы только что плавали в реке. We've been just swimming in the river.
